<WPA Workwear: Another New Deal Program> To address the severe economic problems of the early 1930s following the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created emergency relief agencies such as the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Inaugurated on March 4, 1933, Roosevelt declared to a nation suffering from 25 percent unemployment, "Our greatest primary task is to put people to work." The CCC and WPA were formed not only to provide jobs for qualified unemployed workers but also to alleviate the nation's environmental, agricultural, and social problems. As previously mentioned, the CCC was a program for unemployed youths aged 18 to 25, nicknamed the "Tree Army," and also served as a natural interest in the military. In contrast, the WPA, or "Works Progress Administration," had an average worker age of 40. They built new schoolhouses, erected new hospitals, laid stormwater and sewer pipes, constructed new bridges, built new airfields, paved or repaired roads, and planted 24 million trees to reduce topsoil loss during the Dust Bowl. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, many Americans were deployed to World War II or called upon to manufacture weapons and support the war effort on the home front. This demand and the WPA's efforts brought unemployment rates close to 0%, leading Roosevelt to declare in December 1942 that the WPA was no longer needed and called for its abolition. Within this large-scale program, blue-collar workwear, primarily for women engaged in labor, was produced. These were "SEWING ROOMS," and the clothing produced there was tagged with "Il Made by W.P.A SEWING ROOMS, NOT TO BE SOLD." In Texas, where there were sewing rooms, the seamstresses took great pride in their work and said that the initials "W.P.A" stood for "We Patch Anything." They repaired old clothes, made new ones, and wore them themselves, along with those in need and other WPA workers. WPA clothing has two interesting features: design and sewing specifications. The design is uniquely diverse, based on military workwear like that worn by the CCC, but without strict rules based on specifications. W.P.A clothing is unique and features many arrangements. Another sewing specification is that the "sewing" that was already mainstream in workwear production at the time was absent. This suggests that the sewing factory environment was not large-scale, and the process involved only "straight stitching" instead of "industrial sewing machines." For these reasons, unique denim workwear exists, and in America, the number of WPA collectors is growing at a faster rate than CCC collectors. A single piece of WPA clothing embodies the indomitable spirit of Americana born in a dynamic era. ※WPA stands for Works Progress Administration, a New Deal agency established during the Great Depression in the United States. It operated from 1935 to 1943, employing millions of unemployed people to carry out public works. ※Shrinkage will occur after washing. ![]() Since its establishment in 1995, this brand has pursued the theme of "faithful reproduction of vintage clothing" without being swayed by trends in the fashion industry.
