■GREENEBAUM Lot.1228 HEAVY LEATHER BOUND OVERALL
![]() Model Height 175cm, Weight 62kg, wearing 30 inch unwashed GREENEBAUM BROTHERS Levi Strauss & Company obtained a patent for "a method of reinforcing clothing pockets with metal rivets" on May 20, 1873, 150 years ago. A year later, on August 25, 1874, "Greenbaum Brothers," also located in San Francisco, obtained a patent for reinforcing stress points with leather. Until the rivet patent expired in the 1890s, Greenbaum Brothers' pants were supplied as durable workwear from the West, where mining resources were booming, to the Midwest. In 2024, Greenbaum Brothers will celebrate its 150th anniversary. We will reproduce their original "Leather Bound Overalls," an original design they created in the 19th century, using a unique original "Two-by-One Denim." The representative waist overalls from Greenebaum are this 3-pocket type model. It features specifications such as leather reinforcement at the rivet points, for which a patent was obtained in 1874, and front pockets without a coin pocket. The three-dimensional L-shape is clearly an original specification. The denim used for this model is a lightweight twill (2/1 twill: two warp threads floating, one weft thread floating) with fine counts used for the weft, which was unusual for that era. Analyzing the original, it is approximately 7.5 count x 16 count, but the fading also shows a strong warp. It is possible that this denim was imported from France as a European import fabric, which was common in New York at the time. Greenebaum was not only an import business but also had a base in New York. The leather reinforcement is thought to be largely influenced by the rivet patent of 1873. It is easy to imagine that consumers used these stress points as a comparison factor when purchasing, which forced various innovations at these points, including "thread rivets." Regardless of the condition of existing archives, most of the leather reinforcements show no damage at those points, suggesting that their strength was reliable. 7.5 x 16 count selvedge light ounce denim Original metal buttons ![]() Since its establishment in 1995, the brand has continued to pursue the theme of "faithful reproduction of vintage clothing," never being swayed by trends in the fashion industry.
