For work there, durable workwear was needed instead of the Japanese traditional clothing brought from Japan. When Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, established Union Supply Company in 1922, he succeeded in providing high-quality workwear and expanded his business. The palaka check fabric shirts and blouses made by the company, though simple in construction, were durable and easy to move in, quickly gaining popularity and becoming the quintessential palaka style.
