“The picture of Tametomo being rescued by the retainers of Emperor Sutoku” (Sanuki-in Kenzo wo shite Tametomo wo sukuu zu) is a renowned masterpiece by Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
It depicts a scene from “Chinsetsuyumiharizuki,” a novel by Kyokutei Bakin, a popular author at the time.
Minamoto no Tametomo's ship, on its way to the capital to defeat Taira no Kiyomori, is caught in a storm. Tametomo's wife, Shiratama, throws herself into the sea to calm the turbulent waters.
However, the storm does not subside, and a tengu sent by the spirit of Emperor Sutoku saves Tametomo, who is grieving and about to commit seppuku.
Meanwhile, Tametomo's legitimate son, Shuntemmaru, and his retainer, Kiheiji, are saved by a large crocodile shark.
This work is characterized by its dynamic composition, skillfully arranging these three scenes across three large-format sheets.
Kuniyoshi's new expression, which incorporates Western painting ideas and techniques, is strongly reflected in this work, such as the fantastic depiction of the non-existent tengu with light ink, the representation of the crocodile shark inspired by books he had seen, and the lavish use of "blue" pigment that had just arrived from overseas at the time.
