■SUN SURF Special Edition Short-Sleeved Rayon Fugiette KEONI OF HAWAII "WAIKIKI SAND" by JOHN MEIGS SS39741
![]() <Model: Height 175cm, Weight 62kg, wearing size L> <Artwork Explanation> John Meigs, a textile designer indispensable to the history of aloha shirts. Born in Chicago, he studied art and journalism before working as a reporter. He moved to Hawaii in 1938 and began textile design around 1940. His innovative designs were highly regarded by aloha shirt manufacturers, and requests surged. During the war, he visited Tahiti and was influenced by Polynesian culture, then in the post-war period, he fully resumed his design activities in Hawaii. In the 1950s, he became a leading textile designer in Hawaii, and his works are still highly valued in the vintage market today. The reissued "WAIKIKI SAND" depicts activities on Waikiki Beach with a comical touch. It is confirmed that more than eight brands handled this work at the time, indicating its immense popularity and the creation of many color variations. <KEONI OF HAWAII> In 1996, we learned that John Meigs, a legendary textile designer who made a name for himself in the history of Hawaiian fashion, was still alive. He had unreleased works he had drawn in the 1940s, and based on those original drawings, Sun Surf commercialized these phantom works under the name "Keoni of Hawaii." John Meigs also resumed designing aloha shirts, supporting the brand. However, due to his advanced age, the burden increased year by year, and after 2001, artists who shared his vision began to take over the designs. John Meigs built a history of aloha shirts as art. In tribute to his achievements, contemporary artists are releasing aloha shirts as "works" infused with their own artistic sensibilities. <SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION> Aloha shirts symbolize paradise Hawaii. Japanese immigrants were deeply involved in their origin, and not only tropical patterns but also Japanese patterns exist as vintage items. In the mid-20th century, when Hawaii was established as a tourist destination, the demand for aloha shirts as souvenirs rapidly increased. Designs and patterns diversified, and many works were born. Among vintage aloha shirts, there are special rare pieces found through collecting. These masterpieces, gradually being lost over time, are honored by recreating their multi-colored luxurious prints, powerful designs, and details that vary by manufacturer and era, completely and without compromise. This is what defines Sun Surf's Special Edition. Title: "WAIKIKI SAND" Artist: JOHN MEIGS Material: Rayon Fugiette Print: Discharge print Design Pattern: All-over pattern Buttons: Coconut buttons ●DISCHARGE PRINT This is a method of dyeing the fabric first, then using a discharge agent to remove the color from the patterned areas while simultaneously dyeing them with other colors. Since it allows for combinations of dark ground colors and contrasting bright colors, vivid color reproduction stands out. Total weight including packaging: 470g ![]() Sun Surf is an aloha shirt specialty brand of Toyo Enterprises.
