This Kyoka surimono was created by Hokusai with the Kyoka poets' group Asakusagawa, led by the Edo period Kyoka poet Asakusaan Ichindo. Surimono are woodblock prints specially commissioned for distribution and exchange among haikai or kyoka poetry circles, unlike commercially available ukiyo-e. Because they circulated only among a limited number of people, they were treasured as rare and luxurious works. This print, utilizing a tall, narrow format known as a hashira-e-ban, depicts people enjoying a Bon dance in an overlapping composition, with lively renderings of their expressions, gestures, costumes, and patterns. Furthermore, the seven men and women are thought to be depicted as the Seven Gods of Fortune (Daikokuten, Ebisu, Fukurokuju, Bishamonten, Hotei, Benzaiten, Kisshoten), making this a very auspicious design rich in good fortune.
