■SUN SURF × Jakuchu Ito Short Sleeve Rayon Hawaiian Shirt "Tsukumogami-zu" (Hyakki Yakō) Japanese Design Special Edition SS39325
![]() <Model: Height 175cm, Weight 62kg, Wearing size L> There is an old Japanese legend that says, "Objects that have existed for a hundred years are inhabited by gods or spirits and play tricks on people." From such folk beliefs, the spirits inhabiting objects came to be called Tsukumogami, and were depicted in yokai paintings. Unlike ghost paintings, which were drawn to instill fear in people, a characteristic of these paintings is their often friendly style. Such characteristics can also be seen in the yokai that appear in Jakuchu Ito's "Tsukumogami-zu" (Picture of Tsukumogami), which is the subject of this work. The painting depicts a dim light expressed through gradients, and Tsukumogami lined up in a dark space dimly illuminated. In the front are yokai of tea utensils that have been used for many years, such as a tea kettle, a fresh water jar, and a teacup, followed by various other Tsukumogami including a candelabra, a Torikabuto (an ornamental headpiece shaped like a phoenix, used in bugaku court music), a biwa (Japanese lute), and a tsuzumi (hand drum). Jakuchu Ito was born in Kyoto in 1716 to a greengrocer family, but had no interest other than painting, sometimes abandoning the family business to seclude himself in the mountains. His exceptional talent manifested in his eccentric works, which continue to captivate people even today. This time, to express Jakuchu Ito's work as an aloha shirt, we named it "Tsukumogami-zu" (Picture of Tsukumogami), after the original painting. The motifs are arranged with varying intensity to allow appreciation of the differences between the front and back. The artist's seal and the striped pattern of the outer frame were also added to create a 1950s taste. <Japanese Design: National Treasure of Japan> Focusing on the artists of the Edo period, when Japanese culture and art flourished, this series reproduces the works of master artists on the canvas of aloha shirts, bringing back to life the passion embodied in the designs, which Japan proudly presents to the world. This series, which began with collaborations with works by Kyosai Kawanabe, is now entering its next phase with the addition of new artists. Title of work: Tsukumogami-zu (Picture of Tsukumogami) Artist: Jakuchu Ito / Edo period (18th century) / Ink on paper Material: Rayon Fujiette Print: Overprint Buttons: Brown Mother-of-Pearl Buttons ●Overprint A technique of layering darker colors over a light base color. Compared to discharge printing, it allows for more colors, and the overlapping of border colors creates a beautiful gradation. It is suitable for realistic patterns like Japanese designs. ●Rayon Fujiette A plain weave fabric with rayon filament in the warp and spun rayon in the weft. It combines the suppleness similar to Fuji silk with the unique texture of rayon. The fuzziness on the surface is also a characteristic of Fujiette.
