■SUN SURF × Yoshitoshi Tsukioka SPECIAL EDITION "Nisemurasaki Inaka Genji" Short Sleeve Rayon Hawaiian Shirt Japanese Design SPECIAL EDITION Aloha Shirt SS39531

The title of this work, "Nisemurasaki Inaka Genji," is a long novel in which the author Ryutei Tanehiko reimagined the world of Murasaki Shikibu's "The Tale of Genji," setting it in the Heian to Muromachi periods, and published it with illustrations by Utagawa Kunisada (third Utagawa Toyokuni).

It is said to be one of the works that developed Edo literature, with 38 volumes (152 books in total, 4 books per volume) published from 1829. Later, in the Meiji era, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka created five scenes from the same work as a triptych of large-format nishiki-e (brocade pictures).
It depicts Ashikaga Mitsuuji and his lover, Tasogare, taking shelter from the rain in an old temple. While they were planning to spend the night there, Tasogare's mother, Shinonome, wearing a mask and transformed into a female demon, attacked them.

Yoshitoshi Tsukioka was a ukiyo-e artist who was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. He studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and began his career as an artist at the age of 15, drawing warrior pictures.
He led the ukiyo-e world during the turbulent period of transition from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era, and is known as "the last ukiyo-e artist." This time, in expressing Yoshitoshi Tsukioka's work as an aloha shirt, the "Nisemurasaki Inaka Genji" is titled after the original work, with the tense scene of the female demon appearing with smoke and attacking on the front, and the scene of her disappearing with smoke on the back.

This series focuses on artists of the Edo period, when Japanese culture and art expanded further, reproducing their masterpieces on the canvas of aloha shirts, and reviving the passion for Japanese designs that Japan boasts to the world.
This series, which began with a collaboration with Kawanabe Kyōsai's works, will welcome new artists and move on to the next stage.

A technique of layering darker colors over a light base color. Compared to discharge printing, more colors can be used, and the blending of colors at the boundaries creates beautiful gradations. It is suitable for realistic patterns like Japanese designs.

●Rayon Fujiette
A plain-woven fabric made with filament rayon warp and spun rayon weft. It combines the suppleness similar to Fuji silk with the unique texture of rayon. The slightly napped surface is also a characteristic of Fujiette.
