■SUN SURF Rayon Crepe Hawaiian Shirt "SYMBOL OF GOOD LUCK" SURFRIDERS SPORTSWEAR Special Edition SS39483

<Model: Height 175cm, Weight 62kg, Wearing Size L>
The first official Japanese immigrants to Hawaii were 150 artisans and farmers from Tokyo and Kanagawa, recruited by Van Reed, the Hawaiian Consul in Yokohama. These individuals, known as "Gannenmono" (first year immigrants), crossed to Hawaii with hopes for the future, but life there proved to be much harder than they had imagined. Therefore, the ancient Japanese custom of thinking of their homeland and carrying good luck charms to ensure good fortune was inherited and continued unchanged in Hawaii. This also greatly influenced the culture of Aloha shirts, leading to a trend of wearing Aloha shirts with good luck motifs.

This piece was made by "SURFRIDERS SPORTSWEAR," which opened as a gift shop on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki around 1940. It originally started as a "Sewing Shop" in downtown Honolulu, making custom-made pennants, emblems, and flags. They also produced shirts and dresses at that store, which were then sold as original items to tourists at the SURFRIDERS SPORTSWEAR shop in Waikiki. Unusually for a Hawaiian brand of that era, they also sold a considerable quantity through mail order.

<What is SUN SURF SPECIAL EDITION?>
Aloha shirts symbolize paradise in Hawaii. Japanese immigrants were deeply involved in their origin, and not only tropical patterns but also Japanese patterns exist as vintage designs. By the mid-20th century, when Hawaii was established as a tourist destination, the demand for Aloha shirts as souvenirs rapidly increased. Designs and patterns diversified, leading to the creation of many pieces. During the process of collecting vintage Aloha shirts, some truly special items are rarely encountered. In tribute to the textile designers who created these masterpieces that are gradually being lost to time, SUN SURF's Special Edition meticulously reproduces their charms, including luxurious multi-color prints, powerful designs, and details unique to each manufacturer and era.

●Rayon Crepe
A fabric made with rayon non-twisted yarn for the warp and rayon crepe yarn for the weft, commonly found in Japanese patterns. It is characterized by its textured surface and cool feel. It was originally developed as a fabric for traditional Japanese clothing.
