■SUN SURF Short Sleeve Cotton Hawaiian Shirt "PAIR OF HERON" HATA DRY GOODS STORE SPECIAL EDITION SS39480
![]() This piece depicts a dynamic pair of herons with outstretched wings, clinging to willow branches submerged in a lake. Among the aloha shirts produced in Hawaii in the 1950s, pieces featuring large animal motifs are extremely rare, with the exception of Japanese patterns. Furthermore, despite rayon being the predominant material at the time, this piece is printed on cotton barkcloth, making it a collectible item. S. Hata Shoten, led by Sadonosuke Hata, imported various goods from Japan and the mainland U.S. to support the lives of Japanese immigrants, greatly expanding his business. Yoichi Hata, who founded Y. Hata Company as an affiliated company, established "Hata Dry Goods Store" in Hilo on the island of Hawaii, where he sold aloha shirts. At the time, S. Hata Shoten served as a liaison in Hawaii for Ichida (a major Japanese textile trading company), and the company handled many unusual fabrics, such as rayon slub. The barkcloth used in this work was one of them. Aloha shirts symbolize Rakuten Hawaii. Japanese immigrants were deeply involved in their origins, and not only tropical patterns but also Japanese patterns exist as vintage items. In the mid-20th century, when Hawaii was established as a tourist destination, the demand for aloha shirts as souvenirs rapidly increased. Designs and patterns diversified, and many works were created. In the process of collecting vintage aloha shirts, one occasionally encounters truly special pieces. In tribute to the textile designers who created these masterpieces, which are gradually being lost over time, Sun Surf's Special Edition meticulously and perfectly reproduces their charm, including luxurious multi-color prints, powerful designs, and details that differ depending on the manufacturer and era.
