■REDWING Iron Range Boots Alpine Portage No.8078
![]() Iron Ranger is a term for the miners who worked in the iron ore mining region "Iron Range" in northern Minnesota, USA, where the Red Wing company is located. They wore "capped toe" boots, which had an extra layer of leather added to the toe to protect their feet. From this, these capped toe boots were named Iron Ranger boots. This "capped toe" was also a widely adopted design in work boots of the early 20th century. Looking at Red Wing's early catalogs (from 1910), 33 out of 37 types of work boots listed had a capped toe design. As time went on, and steel toes, which are now standard in safety shoes, became widespread, capped toe boots became less common. However, some steel-toe boots retained the capped toe design, which was originally for toe protection and reinforcement, until the 1990s. The Iron Ranger is a refined version of the capped toe design, passed down to the present day. The last (shoetree) is the No. 8 last, widely used in Red Wing's round toe boots. It has a comfortable design characteristic of work boots and is highly regarded for its ease of wear. The sole features a Vibram #430 mini-lug sole, known for its excellent grip. This #8078 uses earthy, deep green Alpine Portage leather. This stylish leather has been added to the popular Iron Ranger series, further enhancing the product lineup. If the leather surface appears dry, apply a thin layer of "Mink Oil" or "All Natural Leather Conditioner." After about 30 minutes, it is recommended to wipe off any remaining oil from the leather surface with a dry cloth. Alpine Portage is naturally a smooth and slightly glossy leather. Polishing with cream will enhance its luster. Please use "Boot Cream / Neutral (colorless)" which can be used on any color. Apply an amount of boot cream roughly the size of a few coffee beans to the entire boot, then polish with a soft cloth or brush. Regular brushing is also effective in preventing dirt and mold on your boots. The long horsehair Red Wing "Brush," which is highly effective at removing dust, is convenient. Red Wing products can be repaired at the manufacturer's headquarters for a long time to come. We offer repairs for sole replacements, restitching, and reattaching hardware, among other services, as much as possible. Please contact us for repair inquiries. There may be wrinkles unique to genuine leather. Please be aware of this characteristic of leather products before purchasing. ![]() One of the world's most famous boot manufacturers, founded in 1905.
