Iron Ranger is a term for the miners working in the Iron Range, an iron ore mining region in northern Minnesota, USA, where the Red Wing Shoe Company is located. They wore "capped-toe" boots with an extra layer of leather on the toes to protect their feet, which is why these capped-toe boots were named Iron Ranger Boots. This "capped-toe" was a widely adopted design for work boots in the early 20th century, and looking at a Red Wing Shoe Company catalog from 1910, soon after its founding, 33 of the 37 types of work boots listed had a capped-toe design. As time went on and steel toes, which are now the standard for safety boots, became widespread, capped-toe boots became less common. However, some steel-toe boots retained the capped-toe design, which was originally for toe protection and reinforcement, until the 1990s. The Iron Ranger is a refined version of this capped-toe design that has been passed down to the present day.

The last (shoe tree) used is the #8 last, which is widely used for Red Wing's round-toe boots. It has a relaxed design characteristic of work boots and is renowned for its comfort. The sole features a Vibram #430 Mini-Lug sole, which offers excellent grip.

The leather is Oro-Legacy, Red Wing's representative brown leather. We select raw hides with particularly smooth grain, and after tanning, we dye them without applying any paint to the grain, resulting in leather with a natural texture. This leather develops more character and a deeper richness with wear. If the leather surface becomes dry, apply a thin coat of "Mink Oil" or "All Natural Leather Conditioner." After about 30 minutes, it is recommended to wipe off any remaining oil on the leather surface with a dry cloth. Since Oro-Legacy is a leather that is only dyed and not painted, the color of the leather will darken slightly after application, but it will gradually return to its original shade. Also, regular brushing is effective in preventing dirt and mold on the boots. Please use a Red Wing "Brush" made of long horsehair, which is highly effective in removing dust.
