 Sweatshirts evolved from wool knit material to cotton material with loop pile lining, becoming "sweat-absorbing shirts" for daily wear by Americans. The military and military academies, whose daily routine involved rigorous training, quickly took notice, and they began to be sold at base stores across the United States. The material is made using a cylindrical hanging knitting machine that knits with uneven tension, just like in those days, giving it a unique flexibility. The seams are flat-seamed with four needles, suitable for underwear, and the V-shaped gusset is sewn with ribbed material placed on top of the body, a specification commonly known as "tataki-tsuke V" (beaten-on V). With a squadron design only on the front, this set-in sweatshirt is packed with Buzz Rickson's signature details. The company has a long history with the military, with its roots tracing back to the Port Trading Company era, its predecessor, when it supplied souvenir jackets (such as sukajan) to US military bases. In 1993, it launched its first flight jacket.
