This method was suitable for mass production as it eliminated the need for side seam sewing, and was often used for inexpensive American-made T-shirt bodies at the time. However, adjusting the width of the garment required adjusting the knitting machine, so manufacturers gradually shifted to designs with side seams, which allowed for easier width adjustment.
